TZ Preko - Open Days – The Small Churches of Ugljan - St. Hippolytus and Cassian

Year: 2025. - 13.August -> 18:00

In the area of Ugljan known as Varoš, situated several dozen meters away from the recently built houses and surrounded by fields, the church of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian has stood for over eight centuries. Saint Hippolytus is known in history as the first antipope as he advocated for the continuation of strict penitential practices of the Church. Saint Cassian served as a Christian teacher during the time of Emperor Diocletian, who expelled him from Rome. He was martyred on August 13, 302 AD.

The church was first mentioned in 1374, and based on its age, it is presumed to have once been a parish church (the parish in Ugljan is mentioned in 1401, and the current parish church of St. Mary was built in 1423). The cemetery, the remains of which are still visible within the wall surrounding the church, supports this assumption.

In early 2022, an initiative was launched to create a new altarpiece (based on a preserved photograph of the old painting), and academic painter Dragan Jelavić from Zadar was selected to author it. The new painting was placed on the altar and blessed during the Feast of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian on August 13, 2022.

A contemporary exhibition, The Stations of the Cross by the aforementioned painter, has been installed on the interior walls of the church and will also be open to the public.
