The main character of the story is a Viking teenager named Hiccup, who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a daily occurrence. The young man's smart and thoughtful sense of humor does not sit well with his tribe and the chieftain who is also his father. However, after Hiccup is involved in dragon training with other teenagers, he sees his chance to prove himself. But after he meets (and befriends) an injured dragon, his world is turned upside down and what started as Hiccup's only chance to prove himself turns into a chance for his entire tribe to take a completely different direction, into a new future.
